Windan Bridge East Perth

The Windan Bridge is a six-lane road that crosses over the Swan River from East Perth to Burswood, forming part of the Graham Farmer Freeway.

 

A joint venture between Transfield and Thiess Contractors (Transfield Thiess Joint Venture (TTJV)) for Main Roads WA, construction began in 1998 with the official opening taking place on 22 April 2000.

 

Measuring 403m (1,322ft) long with nine spans, the bridge is named after Windan, the wife of Yellagonga who was the chief of the Mooro tribe. Her body was buried in the area, as she’d requested.

 

Yellagonga was the leader of the Whadjuk Noongar, with colonists seeing him as the owner of the area north of the Swan River. Although it’s unknown when he was born, his death was reported in 1843. Yellagonga Regional Park, which surrounds Lake Joondalup, was named after him.
