Meckering Salisbury Homestead
At 10.59am on 14 October 1968, a powerful earthquake shook the small wheatbelt town of Meckering, 130km east of Perth. Measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale, it severely damaged more than half of the town's homes and business, leaving approximately 20 people injured.
Throughout the morning, small tremors had been felt but the big earthquake lasted for approximately 40 seconds.
The earthquake was felt throughout the southern part of the state, with damaging effects also experienced in Northam and York.
