Beaconsfield Warehouses
Built in the late 1960’s, the office building I photographed at 2 Clontarf Road sits on an 8,349² block of land. It appears to have purposely been built for a Transperth Bus Depot, which occupied the site until the early 1990s.
A warehouse was constructed on the site in 1998 and together with the office building, takes up 2,350m² of space.
Heritage Listing
On 18 September 2000, the site was adopted as a historic/archaeological site in inHerit’s Heritage List but no further information can be located as to why.
Brencolda Nominees
In March 2009 owners of the site, Brencolda Nominees Pty Ltd, applied for a partial change to the zoning code. Located in an area designated by the City of Fremantle as a ‘mixed use’ area, storage yards were deemed not to be an intended use of the ‘mixed use’ definition. In addition, potential issues of the resulting environmental impact on the local residential area were a concern, with excessive noise emissions and hours of operations that would increase if a change was approved.
The application was then pursued in the State Administrative Tribunal and upon being requested to submit a Management Plan, the initial application was amended to encompass a partial change of storage yard for a two year period.
Brencolda Nominees Pty Ltd was first registered as an Australian Proprietary Company on 12 June 1974 and I am yet to find any more information on them or their application.

Development Application
Together with two adjoining properties (1 Naylor Road and 4 Clontarf Road), which both contained a huge warehouse and a few small buildings, they were scheduled to be demolished from February this year (2024). I haven’t returned since for an update.
CLE Town Planning + Design lodged an application on behalf of Stockland Development in May 2023 to amalgamate all three properties as part of a subdivision masterplan. This would see the creation of 162 smaller lots, with six roads and two open space reserves.
Somewhere along the line, the application seems to have increased the subdivision count to 184 lots, no known changes to the roads, a few laneways and four more open space reserves. The height allowance for residential buildings is a minimum of two (terraced townhouses) and three storeys (multiple dwellings).
No doubt, the block of land will remain vacant for a few years before development begins.
